Tara Ryan and Danica Brockwell are employed by Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC) this summer to conduct research at the Pye Centre. They spend half their time working on their research project with AAFC, and the other half supporting the work of the Pye Centre.
When the Labrador Institute acquired the Pye Farm in 2019, we inherited the bountiful, and beloved, strawberry field that had long been a staple of Frank and Joyce Pye’s operations. But, most strawberry fields are productive for only 3 to 5 years. So, in the Fall of 2020, it was time for that generation of strawberry plants to retire, after many years of providing us with delicious berries.
Peas are so much fun to grow and are super beneficial to people, animals, and soil alike. This season, we’ve dedicated approximately 3 acres on the Pye Centre farm property to growing peas as a cover crop in an effort to enhance a large section of our market garden soil.
